Glossary
The words that come up on this site and in the studies, defined in plain English. Alphabetical.
- Anserine
- A close relative of carnosine found in bird and fish muscle. Often studied alongside it. Not in LactiGo.
- Beta-alanine
- An amino acid the body joins with histidine to make carnosine. Sold as a supplement powder; taken daily for weeks to raise muscle carnosine. Causes tingling in many people. See LactiGo vs beta-alanine.
- Buffering
- Soaking up acid so that pH changes less. Hard exercise makes muscle more acidic; carnosine is one of the molecules inside the muscle cell that buffers this.
- Carnosinase
- An enzyme in human blood that breaks carnosine into its two amino acids within minutes. The reason swallowed carnosine does not reach muscle well, and the reason beta-alanine is the usual oral route.
- Carnosine
- A dipeptide of beta-alanine and histidine, made and stored by the body, mostly in muscle and brain. The active ingredient in LactiGo.
- Carnosine-magnesium complex
- Carnosine bound to magnesium. The form in LactiGo, covered by its patent. A skin-model study found the complex passed through reconstructed skin better than free carnosine.
- Cosmetic
- A product applied to the body for cleansing, beautifying, or changing appearance or feel, regulated as a cosmetic rather than a medicine. LactiGo is sold as a cosmetic gel in Australia.
- Crossover trial
- A study in which each participant gets both the product and the placebo, in different sessions, so each person is their own comparison. The rugby sevens trial was a crossover.
- Dipeptide
- Two amino acids joined together. Carnosine is one.
- Ethoxydiglycol
- A cosmetic solvent and skin penetration enhancer, also called Transcutol. In LactiGo. See ingredients.
- Go Packet
- LactiGo's 10 mL single-use sachet. One application.
- Informed Sport
- A certification program in which every batch of a product is tested for banned substances by an accredited laboratory before release. LactiGo carries it. See drug testing.
- ISO 17025
- The international standard that accredits testing laboratories. Informed Sport testing is done under it.
- Meta-analysis
- A study that pools the results of many trials to estimate an overall effect. The 2017 beta-alanine meta-analysis pooled 40 studies.
- Null result
- A trial outcome where the product and the placebo did not differ by a meaningful amount.
- Paraesthesia
- The tingling, prickling skin sensation beta-alanine causes. Harmless, disliked.
- Peak power
- The highest power output in a sprint, measured in watts. The main outcome in the rugby sevens trial.
- Placebo
- An inactive look-alike given so that participants and researchers cannot tell who got the real thing. A trial without one cannot separate the product from expectation.
- Repeated sprint
- A test protocol of short all-out efforts with short rests, used to mimic team sport. The rugby sevens trial used 12 six-second sprints.
- Stockist
- A business that sells or supplies a product. On this site it means an independent affiliate who holds some stock for trials and links buyers to LactiGo's store.
- Subscribe and Save
- LactiGo's monthly subscription. 10% off, managed in the customer portal, no minimum term.
- Topical
- Applied to the skin.
- Transdermal
- Passing through the skin into the tissue beneath. The claim at the heart of LactiGo, measured so far in a skin model and in horses.
- Triple-blind
- A trial in which participants, the people running the sessions, and the people analysing the data all do not know who got the product. The strongest form of blinding.
- WADA
- The World Anti-Doping Agency. Publishes the Prohibited List. Carnosine is not on it.
- Wingate test
- A 30-second all-out cycling sprint against a fixed resistance. A standard laboratory measure of anaerobic power.
- Yo-Yo test
- A shuttle-run fitness test used in football. The 2016 footballer report used it.
